A white-ball series between India and New Zealand will start on Friday.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, spoke with NDTV about the forthcoming series against India and running the non-striker out.

After the T20 World Cup concluded, the focus turned to the upcoming series between India and New Zealand, which would include three T20 Internationals and as many ODIs. In the shortest format, India would be captained by Hardik Pandya, while Shikhar Dhawan would serve in the same role during ODIs. With Kane Williamson in charge, New Zealand picked a full-strength team on Tuesday. Adam Milne and Finn Allen have been given a chance to fill the roster spots left vacant by Trent Boult and Martin Guptill.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, spoke to NDTV on Tuesday. He discussed the selection process, Umran Malik’s ascent, the argument over the strike rate in the shortest format, and the series against India that will be played soon after the World Cup. Williamson thinks that this kind of dismissal is not “an attractive element of the game” since it involves running the non-striker out when he or she is too far ahead of the bowler when the latter is preparing to bowl.

“We have no intention of doing that. It has frequently been spoken. Personally, I don’t find that aspect of the game to be very appealing. You compete, you give it your all, and you want to make sure that nobody is trying to leave the crease early in order to gain an edge. But I don’t believe it’s a particularly fun aspect of the game. The majority of spectators arrive to witness the contest between the bat and ball, not to witness a ball not being bowled “Williamson spoke with NDTV.

Glenn Phillips appeared to be taking a sprinter-like stance at the non-end strikers during the T20 World Cup, and Williamson commented on that: “Without a doubt, we didn’t talk about that. All of it was Glenn. He’s fairly speedy, so he reasoned that starting off like a sprinter may help. He might have been able to put his bat in while standing outside of his crease and get an advantage. There are several alternative theories in circulation, “Added he.

“Glenn is a very unique player, and he had a fantastic World Cup, playing outstanding knocks for us. We are aware of his exceptional athletic ability. He is such a key player and gives our team that extra something, “Added he.

While Williamson was captain of the SunRisers Hyderabad in the IPL, he had a close-up view of the speedster Umran Malik. Umran will now participate in the T20I series for India. In reference to Umran, Williamson said: “Yes, he is incredibly skilled and possesses a bowling average of 150, which not many people in the world possess. Every chance he gets, he would learn something new. He had a terrific time and some memorable experiences in the IPL last season. He has a unique talent.”

Despite having played in the T20 World Cup and having chosen to leave his central contract earlier this year, Trent Boult has not been selected for the series against India.

“There is a lot to consider, as well as the appearance of that photograph. There must be equilibrium in this dynamic environment. Everyone is experiencing it for the first time, and the players who have already made this choice are still eager to represent New Zealand. As a team, you are constantly seeking to improve. We want to see the balance around those options. The other guys have the chance to commit to team duties because of this. I suppose you have to work through it “Williamson remarked.

The New Zealand captain said when asked if he intended to participate in all one of his country’s next games: “We have to manage all the players across all the games and formats, I suppose, just like everyone else. Definitely, the participants in each format. This year, I believe, has seen more cricket days than any other year in the game’s history. Yes, it’s crucial to keep gamers interested. Touchwood, my elbow is getting better with time.”

Five days after the T20 World Cup concluded, India and New Zealand would play a series. Williamson agreed that cricket boards should prioritize the forms in which they must play a World Cup in the upcoming months. The ODI World Cup is scheduled to be staged in India the following year.

According to Williamson, “it tends to happen a lot; boards prioritize, work backward from the key events, and factor in the format that is about to come up.”

Williamson said on the criticism of the lower strike rates in T20s “Yes, I agree. I believe it all comes down to what the squad needs and demands, as well as how it handles certain circumstances. Players constantly want to extend innings and do things like that. It is somewhat erratic in the way that it operates in T20s. The strike rate fluctuates between being lower and greater. When circumstances and partnerships are taken into account, the result is somewhat what it is. Even though you constantly strive to get better, sometimes you notice worthwhile contributions that have a lower strike rate. There are larger striking rates on other days. It is highly dependant on the circumstances.”

Kane Williamson (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Adam Milne, Glenn Phillips, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, and Blair Tickner make up the New Zealand squad.

Starting on November 18, 2022, cricket fans in India can watch the India trip of the New Zealand series on Prime Video. Pre-coverage begins for T20I matches at 11 a.m. and ODI matches at 6 a.m.
