According to reports, Harmanpreet Kaur may receive a 4-point demotion for her behavior in the third ODI against Bangladesh and its aftermath.

Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, has been thrust into the limelight when she harshly criticized the umpires in the third One-Day International, which ended in a stalemate with Bangladesh. After being dismissed from the game, Harmanpreet smashed her stumps and continued her tirade against the umpires throughout the presentation ceremony and the last picture shoot of the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have not yet declared the penalties that Harmanpreet will face, although reports suggest that they will be severe.

Cricbuzz had previously stated that Harmanpreet’s antics in the series’ last ODI would result in a 75% match money cut and 4 demerit points. India’s participation in the upcoming Asian Games may be jeopardized if a sanction of this magnitude is imposed.

An ESPNCricinfo report states that three penalty points have been proposed for equipment damage and one demerit point has been recommended for public criticism of the match officials.

If a player receives four demerit points during a 24-month period, he will be suspended for the next Test match, two One-Day Internationals, or two Twenty20 Internationals. The Indian women’s team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games, hence their next matches will be in those rounds.

If Harmanpreet is actually given a 4-point demerit, she will be unable to play in the first two rounds of the elimination round but will be available for the final if India advances.

Some of the Indian women’s team’s alums have also spoken out against the current captain. The senior batter has been criticized for her behavior throughout the match by both Anjum Chopra and Madan Lal. They believe the batter might have handled her frustration with the umpires in a more constructive manner.
