Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan have received promotions at Mumbai Indians as the team seeks to increase its “global cricket presence”.

Mahela Jayawardene, a legend of Sri Lanka, has resigned as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians after being named Global Head of Performance by the team. The former Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan, has also been given a new position. Now serving as MI’s global head of cricket development, the former India bowler. The two make up the core of the team for the team’s “expanding global cricket footprint,” according to a Mumbai Indians official announcement.

The two former players were given more important duties as MI entered the T20 leagues in South Africa and the UAE.

The statement continued, “Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan have been elevated by the Mumbai Indians ownership to take on new duties with the purpose of establishing a global cricket legacy for MI.

Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan, two MI veterans with extensive understanding of the MI value system and a solid track record, are being elevated to new roles as part of the structure-building process.

“As part of strengthening the structure, two MI veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan with a deep understanding of the MI value system and proven track record, are being elevated to new responsibilities,” MI wrote in reference to Jayawardene’s new position.

The declaration further mentioned Zaheer Khan “would be in charge of player development, building on MI’s strong program for talent discovery and grooming and implementing it across regions, which has been essential to MI’s success and philosophy. Every region has its own set of difficulties, and Zaheer’s high position will be crucial in assisting MI teams all around the world.”
