In 2019, with the club having finished last, Mike Hesson signed on with the Royal Challengers. In preparation for IPL 2022, Sanjay Bangar was elevated to the role of head coach.

As the franchise reviews the contracts of Director of cricket operations Mike Hesson and Head Coach Sanjay Bangar, a shakeup in the coaching staff is possible for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The RCB has indicated that they will carefully consider the success of the IPL coaching staff before making any decisions regarding contract renewals in September. Their agreement with RCB has not been voided. There hasn’t been a final decision made on the team yet. The franchise added in a statement, “We will return if any announcement is made.” Neither Bangar nor Hesson could be reached for comment on the current state of their contract with the RCB.

After the 2019 season, when the Royal Challengers finished last, Hesson signed with the club. In preparation for IPL 2022, the team promoted Bangar as head coach after Simon Katich resigned for personal reasons.

During Hesson’s time with RCB as a coach and then as director of cricket operations, the team had a successful season but fell short of winning the IPL championship.

In 2020, Hesson’s first year as captain, RCB finished fourth in the league stage under his leadership, but they were eliminated by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

RCB came in third place in the IPL 2021 standings, although they were eliminated in the semifinals by Kolkata Knight Riders.

After that season’s IPL, RCB finished in fourth place but lost to Rajasthan Royals in the second Qualifier. Unfortunately, they did not make the postseason in IPL 2023.

During the first season of the Women’s Premier League, Hesson oversaw the Royal Challengers Bangalore women’s team. RCB, led by Smriti Mandhana, came in at the bottom of the league’s final standings.
