After Thursday’s loss by Afghanistan in the opening one-day international of the series, Tamim Iqbal declared his retirement.

Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of Bangladesh, is credited with having persuaded Tamim Iqbal to reverse his intention to retire from international cricket. After Thursday’s loss to Afghanistan in the opening one-day international of the three-match series, the veteran left-hander shocked many cricket fans by announcing his retirement. It was claimed on Friday by ESPNCricinfo that after speaking with Sheikh Hasina, he has chosen to reverse his earlier decision to leave cricket.

During a Thursday press conference, Tamim broke the news.

I’ve reached the end of the road. I have done everything that I can. I’ve given it everything I’ve got. As of right now, I will no longer be playing cricket at the international level. My final international match came yesterday against Afghanistan. I am ending my career in international cricket immediately. This was not an impulsive choice. I’ve been considering all the possible causes. I’d rather not discuss it here. I have discussed it with close relatives. Since now seems like a good time to end my international cricket career, I’ve decided to do so.

After Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan harshly criticized Tamim for playing the match despite acknowledging he was not 100 percent healthy, Tamim held an emotional press conference in Chittagong.

On Friday, Bangladesh announced that Litton Das would be leading the team in the remaining ODIs.

Litton said the squad was looking ahead to Saturday’s game to tie the series.

It’s hard to say if we’ll miss him. If I get hurt today, it won’t be a big deal for the squad. Newcomers will continue to arrive in the future. One day, we hope to go there, too. Since he is not present, he advised that we not dwell on the subject.
