Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was designated the ICC’s “Global Ambassador” on Tuesday, with the 2023 Cricket World Cup for men set to begin on Thursday in Ahmedabad. Before England takes on New Zealand in the tournament’s first game, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who has played in an impressive six 50-over World Cups, will walk out with the World Cup trophy and officially launch the tournament. I’ve been involved with the World Cup since 1987, when I was a ball boy, and have represented my country in six games. Tendulkar was cited as saying, “Winning the World Cup in 2011 is the proudest moment of my cricketing journey.”

This year’s World Cup is being held in India, and I couldn’t be more psyched to watch all of the incredible teams and athletes compete. I hope that, as previous editions of the World Cup have inspired young girls and boys to take up sports and represent their country at the most significant level, so too will this year’s edition. World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan of England, World Cup-winning wicketkeeper-batsman Aaron Finch of Australia, Sri Lanka’s spin great Muttiah Muralitharan, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, India’s Suresh Raina and ex-captain Mithali Raj, and Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez will all serve as ICC ambassadors for the biggest Cricket World Cup ever.

“It’s a real honor to have Sachin as our Global Ambassador as we celebrate the one-day game and get ready for what we know is going to be the biggest Men’s Cricket World Cup ever,” said ICC General Manager, Marketing & Communications Claire Furlong.

We can’t wait for the action to begin, and he’ll be joined by nine other sports icons who will do the same.
