It was a necessary breakthrough for England after Rahul and India’s fellow opener Rohit Sharma started the second innings cautiously.

The opening combination had negotiated the difficult openings of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, both of whom threatened to create considerable damage early on.

Rahul’s dismissal meant that India went into the Lunch Pause with a deficit of 320 runs, after the first time that England had reached 432.

In the earlier stages, India was bowled out for a meager 78 during the first day they choose to bat.

In response, England set a total of 432, with the skipper Joe Root scored in a magnificent 121-run knock in his 23rd test century.

Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, and Dawid Malan chipped for hosts over half a century. Mohammed Shami was the chosen Indian bowler with 4/95 figures.
