Jonny Bairstow stood in a second slip and collected an amazing one-hand catch to return KL Rahul to the pavilion in the second innings of India.

India tried to chip over England’s mammoth 345-run first input on the third day of the Headingley Test, Leeds Friday, but KL Rahul’s release filled visitors shortly before lunch. Rahul edged a delivery from Craig Overton to the slip cordon with what turned out to be the final ball of the first day. Standing second, Jonny Bairstow went left, and made no mistake, because he held his left hand unbelievably to grab the Indian opener and returned him to the pavilion.

It was a necessary breakthrough for England after Rahul and India’s fellow opener Rohit Sharma started the second innings cautiously.

The opening combination had negotiated the difficult openings of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, both of whom threatened to create considerable damage early on.

Rahul’s dismissal meant that India went into the Lunch Pause with a deficit of 320 runs, after the first time that England had reached 432.

In the earlier stages, India was bowled out for a meager 78 during the first day they choose to bat.

In response, England set a total of 432, with the skipper Joe Root scored in a magnificent 121-run knock in his 23rd test century.

Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, and Dawid Malan chipped for hosts over half a century. Mohammed Shami was the chosen Indian bowler with 4/95 figures.
