James Anderson
James Anderson dismissed Deal Elgar in the first innings of the first Test against England.

James Anderson’s delivery was attempted to be worked off of Dean Elgar’s pads. The ball, though, nicked the thigh guard before bouncing off his right arm and landing on the stumps.

Day 2 of the ongoing first Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground saw South Africa dismiss England for a meager score of 165 thanks in large part to Kagiso Rabada’s outstanding five-wicket haul. In retaliation, Sarel Erwee and captain Dean Elgar gave South Africa a strong start. Before Elgar was out in one of the most unpleasant circumstances, he and Erwee shared 85 runs for the first wicket. Elgar made an effort to imitate James Anderson’s delivery. The ball, though, nicked the thigh guard before bouncing off his right arm and landing on the stumps.

England Cricket posted the footage to their official Twitter account.

Notably, Elgar was ruled to have been caught behind by Stuart Broad, but a quick review revealed that the ball had actually struck his pad rather than his bat.

The southpaw also edged Matthew Potts while batting on seven, but Zak Crawley dropped a head-high slip catch that slipped between his fingertips.

Rabada got five wickets in an innings of a Test match for the 12th time earlier, finishing with 5 for 52 in 19 overs.

Anrich Nortje had taken three wickets after Rabada’s opening solid performance, including the prized scalp of hot-shot Jonny Bairstow for a duck.

Ollie Pope’s 73 was the only double-figure score by a specialist England batsman; the captain and all-rounder Ben Stokes’ 20 was the next-best performance.

After moving to an all-out assault strategy, England has won all four of their Test matches under the new leadership of Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
