Shubman Gill
Against New Zealand in the first ODI, Shubman Gill showed his skills behind the stumps.

On Wednesday, Shubman Gill continued his meteoric climb with his third ODI century in his 19th encounter in the format.

Additionally, he reached 1000 runs in ODIs in a record 19 games.

Indian cricket fans have had high hopes for Shubman Gill ever since he became a household name at the 2018 U-19 World Cup. As Punjab’s young opening batsman, he has not flopped. On Wednesday, Gill continued his meteoric climb by scoring his third ODI century in his 19th outing in the format. In the opening one-day international of a three-game series in Hyderabad, he took three wickets while bowling. Gill, who is 23 years old, has also scored a hundred in a Test match.

Gill has now scored a thousand runs in back-to-back games. At the game against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, he scored an impressive 116 runs. Gill reached the landmark of 1000 runs in 19 innings in the first One-Day International against New Zealand. He beat Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan, who both reached 1000 runs in this format after 24 games, to become the quickest Indian to do so.

With Imam-ul-Haq of Pakistan, Gill has tied for the second-fastest time to reach 1000 runs. Gill achieved 1000 runs in ODIs in fewer innings than Viv Richards, Babar Azam, Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie van der Dussen, whom each needed 21 innings to reach the milestone. Fakhar Zaman of Pakistan reached 1000 runs in ODIs in the fewest number of innings (18).

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, fully supported Gil before the one-day international series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Gill was chosen over Ishan Kishan, another powerful batsman, to be Rohit’s opening partner. And the kid was mature enough most of the time. Gill’s striking has been particularly impressive in recent innings. He appears to be making an attempt to step up for the team’s sake.

Considering the upcoming One-Day International World Cup will be held in India, if Shubman can maintain his current level of play, he will be given the nod to open in place of Shikhar Dhawan.
