Gavaskar praised Shreyas Iyer’s performance in the two Tests against Sri Lanka, praising the batsman’s “outstanding” effort.
After a painful 2-1 Test series loss to South Africa earlier in the year, the home matches against Sri Lanka gave India the confidence and steadiness they needed. Sri Lanka was totally outplayed by a dominating Indian side under Rohit Sharma’s leadership as the new skipper. India defeated Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the second Test after winning the first by an innings in Mohali.
But the Indian players’ fine performances would be a concern for Rohit Sharma and the team management.
At home last year, Shreyas Iyer astonished everyone with his Test debut century against New Zealand and continued his fine form against Sri Lanka.
Iyer scored 27 in the first innings of the Mohali Test but came back to form in the second Test, scoring 92 runs in the first innings and 67 runs in the second to help India win.
It was also acknowledged by veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Star Sports’ post-match show.
“He could be the next big thing in Indian cricket,” Gavaskar said of Iyer for seizing the opportunity that came his way.
“Anyone who performs at the level he did…incredibly it’s appealing to see him play. He’s a svelte young man with an attractive face. So, all signs go to him becoming the next big thing in Indian cricket in the next six to eight months.”
The first Test match between India and England will take place on July 1 at Edgbaston.
