T20 World Cup 2007: A 136-run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s 140-run partnership in India’s T20 World Cup match against Afghanistan broke a 14-year-old record for the highest partnership for India in a World Cup match.

India beat Afghanistan by 66 runs on Wednesday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, their first victory of the ongoing T20 World Cup. India scored 210 in 20 overs as they batted first, with openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma each scoring a century. A 140-run partnership for the first wicket set the tone for the Virat Kohli-led side early on in a must-win match against Mohammad Nabi’s team.

With their 140-run stand, Rohit and Rahul broke India’s 14-year-old record for the largest T20 World Cup partnership.

It was previously held by Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag in the 2007 T20 World Cup against England when they put on a 136-run first-wicket stand.

Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes against Stuart Broad are widely regarded as the highlight of that match.

Moreover, this was Rohit and Rahul’s fourth-century stand in 23 T20I innings, the second-most by a pair in the game’s shortest format.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have five-century stands in 19 innings between them for Pakistan.

While Pakistan currently holds the lead in Group 2, India has moved up to fourth after this victory.

To place in the top two of the group, the team led by Virat Kohli must win its final three games while also relying on the results of the other teams.

On Friday, the Indian team will take on Scotland in Dubai.
