World Test Championship Final: Virat Kohli set a new record when he surpassed MS Dhoni to become the India captain with the most Tests as captain. As captain, he completed his 61st Test during the final match of the series against New Zealand.
Just as Virat Kohli emerged for the toss at The Ageas Bowl with New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, he has set a new record by leading the Indian team in the most Tests. Kohli will lead India in his 61st match as captain of the country in the longest version of the game, which currently is a new record. Dhoni retired from all forms of cricket after leading India in 60 matches in December 2014. Kohli is also the second-longest-serving Test captain for any Asian country, behind Sri Lanka’s Arjuna Ranatunga (Arjuna was the captain of his country in 56 Tests) and Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq (who had captained his country in 52 Tests).
South Africa’s Graeme Smith has the record for the most matches captained, having served as the skipper of the Proteas for 109 games. Australia’s Allan Border is second with 93 Tests as captain, and Sachin Tendulkar is the only other player to have played 100 Tests as captain.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who won the toss and elected to field in the highly anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) final against India on Saturday, had previously done so in other matches. During an incessant downpour, the start of the game was canceled.
