Rare Batting Accomplishment by Australia’s Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne After 10 Years

Batting against the West Indies, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne each scored 200 runs.

When Australia played the West Indies, two Australian batsmen scored double hundreds in the same innings, only the sixth occasion that had ever happened in Test cricket.

Australian batsmen Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, both of whom prefer to pile on the runs when things are going well, both scored double centuries on day 2 of the first Test against West Indies, leading to the hosts declaring their first innings at a total of 598/4. Smith batted unbeaten on 200 as Labuschagne was out for 204, and with his century, he matched the record of Test cricket great Don Bradman, who had scored 29 hundred.

In 2012, Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke dismantled India in a similar fashion. Other examples include Don Bradman and Bill Ponsford in 1934 and Bill Lawry and Bob Simpson versus England in 1965.

Australia is presently leading the ICC World Test Championship standings, and a win against West Indies will strengthen their prospects of reaching the championship match later next year.

The first Test between Australia and West Indies is being played in Perth.
