Vijay thanked everyone who had helped him along the way from the beginning of his career in 2002 until now in an emotional social media message. He penned,

“With profound humility and appreciation, I must today announce my retirement from all forms of international cricket.

The years 2002-2018 were the best of my life since I got to travel the world and represent India at the highest levels of the sport.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), the Chennai Super Kings, and Chemplast Sanmar have all been tremendously supportive and instrumental in my professional development.

To everyone on my squad, from my teammates to my coaches to my mentors and everyone else who has helped me along the way, it has been an honor to play with you, and I am very grateful.

Thank you so much to all of the cricket fans who have stuck by me through the highs and lows of an international sporting career; your loyalty has been unwavering, and I will never forget the times we’ve shared.

Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to my loved ones, who have always been there for me and supported me no matter what I’ve done professionally. They are the reason I have gotten where I am today.

I’m happy to share that I’ll soon be venturing into the cricketing and business worlds, where I hope to continue playing the game I adore while also facing new challenges. I’m excited to begin this new phase of my life and career as a cricketer, which I believe to be the natural progression for me.

I want to wish the best of luck to my former teammates and the Indian cricket team in their future endeavors.

For the wonderful times we’ve shared,

Much adoration, and much more living!
Vijay”

In 2018, Vijay last played for India in a Test match against Australia.
