A minimum of 20 teams will take part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup from 2024.

It will be revived as an 8-team event in 2025 and 2029, according to reports.

The announcement was made when the ICC unveiled its international schedule of events for the decade from 2024 to 2031.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Tuesday that the men’s Cricket World Cup will return to being a 14-team tournament in 2027 and 2031. Changes were announced by the ICC, the global governing body of cricket, which unveiled a three-year global schedule of events (up to the end of the next decade). The eight-team Champions Trophy, which was won by Pakistan in England in 2017, will be brought back in 2025 and 2029 as a “mini World Cup”.

Compared to the 2014 World Cup, in which there were 14 teams competing, the 2019 tournament featured just 10 teams.

An ICC board statement, however, states, “The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be expanded to include 14 teams and feature 54 matches from 2027 through 2031, whereas the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will expand to include 20 teams and include 55 matches from 2024 through 2030.”

Critics objected to the International Cricket Council’s decision to reduce the number of sides involved in the 2011 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand to just 10.

When the broadcaster-preferred format was adopted, officials said that it helped reduce the chances of an unfair matchup.

The ICC recently announced that they will reach a final decision regarding the hosting of the tournament that begins in October and November later this month, with the BCCI still set to hold the hosting rights even if the tournament is played elsewhere.

In its press release, the ICC also called on event managers to direct all of their planning efforts toward the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 being held in the UAE with the prospect of hosting a venue in the Middle East.

“A final decision will be made in the month of June. Additionally, the Board of Governors of the BCCI agreed that regardless of where the event is played, the BCCI will still be the host of the event “thus, it was added.
