An Indian team captained by Kapil Dev triumphed over West Indies to earn their first-ever 50-over World Cup crown.

A World Cup triumph for Kapil Dev’s Indian team took place in 1978. No one expected India to win the event, but Kapil Dev and his team astonished everyone by making it all the way to the finals. In the final matchup at Lord’s Cricket Ground, India defeated the favorites, the West Indies, by an innings and a half. In the final, India held on to a below-par total as the bowling squad put in a strong effort.

With the bat, India was bowled out for 183, with 38 from Kris Srikanth. In addition to Sandeep Patil’s 27 runs, no one else was able to stay at the plate. In terms of batting, Sunil Gavaskar (2) and Kapil Dev (15) were both unable to get going.

When defending 184, Kapil Dev and his team received a huge boost when they could eliminate Vivian Richards before he reached his half-century. A spectacular catch by Kapil Dev helped him beat Richards and he returned to the pavilion after scoring 33 runs.

Jeff Dujon scored 25 but West Indies were bowled out for 140 and India won by 43 runs. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal each grabbed three wickets for India. – ICC
