Shastri, a stalwart of India’s national team under Sunil Gavaskar, was a member of the World Cup-winning squad in 1983 and was named Player of the Series in the 1985 World Championship.
Right-handed batsman Sachin Tendulkar scored more than 6,500 runs in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India. It wasn’t all bad news, either; he went on to take 280 wickets for his country.
Shastri went on to become well-known as a commentator after he retired, and he also coached the senior national team.
