After last year’s T20I against Sri Lanka, the left-hander was not selected for the T20 World Cup in 2021 and has not been selected for either the just-completed 5-match series against South Africa or the upcoming 2-match series against Ireland.
Dhawan has been a steady performer in the IPL, and his strike rate has risen over the previous few years, but he has fallen behind openers like Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad, with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul still the preferred combo.
The fact that Dhawan was overlooked by the selectors for the series against South Africa and Ireland suggests that he would not be considered for a position when India choose their T20 World Cup team, according to legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar.
